Hosting a party can be a lot of fun, but also involves lots of prep work. You’ve got to make sure everyone has a good time, which means serving good food, playing festive music, and keeping everyone entertained. Here are 10 tips to help you host a fun Christmas party!
Host a fun Christmas party
1. Have a good mix of Christmas music
There’s no way everyone at your party will enjoy every song you pick. But to help people like the music overall, try to have a good mix of different Christmas songs. Fill your iPod or CD player with some classical Christmas favorites, and some modern Christmas songs.
2. It’s all about the food!
Any good party host knows they have to keep the party stocked with snacks! Otherwise you risk people getting hungry and continually asking you when food will be ready. Since this is a Christmas party, try to buy lots of Christmas-themed snacks, especially Christmas cookies! And remember to buy some special snacks for friends with allergies or dietary restrictions.
3. Create a festive buffet
If you’re going to host a fun Christmas party, don’t stop the party to have a sit-down meal. Instead, keep the party going and have a buffet! This is also a great way to reduce how much cooking you have to do for your party, as you can stock your buffet with large amounts of simpler dishes, like finger foods.

4. Plan activities for the kids
If you have kids that will be awake during the party, or any of your friends can’t find a babysitter and bring their kids to the party, make sure to keep them occupied. Set the kids up in an area somewhat off from the party, and give them toys and activity books to keep them busy.
5. Dance the night away
When you host a fun Christmas party you have to include dancing! But if you want your guests to dance, you’ve got to give them space! Try to clear a decent sized circular or oval area in your biggest room and set the music up next to it.
6. Set up conversation spaces
Set some furniture aside for people to sit and talk, or to rest after dancing. Ideally this area would be somewhat quieter. Definitely don’t set it up right next to the music!
7. Store your breakables away
Move any fragile figurines or delicate vases or lamps out of the way before the party starts. This is something most hosts forget and then regret it later on!
8. Have some fun party games ready
Keep your Christmas party fun by planning ahead of time for different games that your guests can do! These should be big group games, but they shouldn’t require that everyone participate, just in case some people aren’t interested.
9. Have “anytime” games set up
If you’re going to host a fun Christmas party, you’ll need a few “anytime” games set up. These are games that can be played at any point, and that don’t require a big group. This way, if there’s ever a lull, or if people get tired of talking or dancing, they can wander over to the games to keep themselves entertained. A dart board or Wii Sports are great anytime games!
10. Give a little gift
Give your guests a small party gift when they leave. It doesn’t have to cost a lot! Some homemade Christmas cookiesor candy in a festive bag is a great favor. Check out our Candy Coated Christmas Cookies.
